We want you to know the best Ford towing techniques, so you are safe on the road when hauling your next big load. The experts at Western Slope Ford encourage you to review this helpful Ford towing and hauling information that we assembled so you understand the best methods to get to your destination.

Weight Capacity

The first step is learning the weight of your load, and then finding out the Ford towing and hauling capacities of your model. Before you start a job, use the Ford towing capacity chart as a helpful guide. Each Ford model provides a sticker or plate on the inside of the driver's door that lists the weight capacity information.

Towing and Hauling Terms

  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)is the total amount of weight your Ford model can both tow and haul. This includes the total weight capacity in a trailer, including the weight of the trailer itself. It is safe to haul when the weight of the load is within GVWR of your Ford model.
  • Tongue Weightis the total of weight applied on the hitch ball, where the trailer connects to the vehicle. Make sure your load is level. You risk overworking your brakes if you put too much pressure on the ball.
  • Gross Combined Weight Ratingis the entire mass from the weight of the vehicle, the passengers, cargo, fuel, and the trailer.

Hitching Techniques

Applying appropriate hitching techniques enhances your Ford towing capacity. The hitch and ball must have a snug and secure fit to ensure there is no wiggle room. Always clamp down tight and insert a pin to safeguard the hitch from coming loose. Before you leave, perform a light check to make sure your brake, turn signal, and hazard lights are in working order.
